As the previous home of the Jaeger factory, Plymouth has a heritage in fashion and textile manufacture that we wish to celebrate and evolve. We want to reignite the fashion manufacturing sector within the area and reimagine how a fashion factory can drive economic and community regeneration.
Makers HQ is an exciting opportunity to bring together academic institutions, businesses, designers, makers and the community to creative a sustainable and innovative business model. We want to drive regeneration through job creation, graduate retention, innovation in fashion manufacture and training opportunities situated at the heart of the community.
We are seeking an independent Chair to steer the Board of Directors and the executive team through the first three years of start-up. We are seeking individuals with a commercial background in business start-up and scale up activity with a proven track record of creating and evolving sustainable businesses. You will need to have experience operating at Board level with excellent negotiation and communication skills. You will set the tone for the organisation and have an infectious enthusiasm. As an independent Chair, you will need to understand the importance of impartiality and possess the skills necessary to draw out the skills of the board so that it functions effectively and to its full potential. You will hold an ambassadorial responsibility for the organisation to promote its work and seek partnership opportunities acting as a figurehead where necessary for press and publicity purposes. The business is a Community Interest Company so you will need to have good awareness of and appreciation for the importance of being a business driven by social purpose. This role is offered as a voluntary, non-remunerated position.
