Meet the Community: Plymouth Scrapstore CIC

Imagine a world where nothing is wasted. A world where you can take your junk modelling skills to the highest level! Imagine no further because the Plymouth Scrapstore CIC is very real and in our Meet the Community feature today we hear from the wonderful staff that tell us about all things Scrapstore!

What is the Plymouth Scrapstore CIC?

“The Plymouth Scrapstore CIC takes stuff destined for the bin, landfill or premature recycling and we give it a chance to have a new adventure. We sell stuff that other people want! It’s exciting, affordable and accessible! We have items you just can’t buy anywhere else! Our store is well organised and tidy to make it really easy for people to locate what they want and browse through our products.”

Where is Plymouth Scrapstore CIC located in Stonehouse? When are you open?

“We are in the Old Mazda garage, between Aldi and the green walled Genisis building on Union Street, Stonehouse. We are open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10-4. Thursdays 10-6. And the first Saturday each month, 10-2, especially for those who can’t get to us at any other time. We can also do visits by arrangement depending on team capacity.”

What do you hope to achieve in 2022 and 2023?

“To survive whatever comes next! In the future. To raise the importance of play and encourage more members of the community to take those small steps towards reducing, or even better refusing to buy stuff! We want to continue sharing the importance of recycling appropriately and the benefits of repairing products wherever possible.”

How can someone become more aware of the importance of recycling?

“Come and talk to us, we have lots of friends who run very specific projects around recycling and every little helps!”

How can someone become more aware of the importance of recycling?

“We love collaborating! We are part of the Rank Foundation family in Plymouth, POP ideas, Precious Plastics Plymouth & Tavistock and the Plymouth Social Enterprise network. We work with Nudge Community Builders, Borrow Don’t Buy, Timebank SW, Art & Energy, Seadream Education, Pollenize, Plymouth Culture, Real Ideas Organisation … that’s  just to name a few!”

Can you tell us something about the Plymouth Scrapstore CIC that not a lot of people know?

“Behind the scenes, we have a garage full of even more amazing stuff! Our fabulous volunteer team work hard to process stuff so it can be made available for our customers.”

“The Scrapstore is over 27 years old and to help us continue serving the Stonehouse community, we are always looking for people with a couple of hours to spare to help us collect, tidy and sort. We also have a casual staff pool to help us run workshops at events. Want to know more? Pop by for a chat. We are really friendly!”
