The Millfields Trust Prom Cellar Visited by BBC Spotlight

In February 2023, The Prom Cellar opened its doors to the public in their new location at The Millfields on Craigie Drive. The primary aim of The Prom Cellar is to provide an opportunity for everyone to experience their prom days without the worry of not being able to afford their dream suit or dress. Previously, the store operated as a pop-up shop with the same goal.

On February 17th, 2023, The Prom Cellar held its official opening day in the new location. BBC Spotlight visited to help share this amazing opportunity available to everyone in the local area who would have their prom soon.

What is The Prom Cellar?

The Prom Cellar is now a permanent service that aims to provide every kid with the prom day they deserve. They achieve this goal by accepting donations of prom suits and dresses from the local community and then selling them to local year 11 students with upcoming proms for a fraction of the cost charged by big designer stores.

The idea for The Prom Cellar came from a local councillor, Sue MacDonald. She was concerned that some families were going into debt to provide their children with the best prom experience. To help alleviate this problem, they set up a pop-up prom shop and encouraged the people of Plymouth and the wider area to donate their beautiful dresses and suits that they would likely never wear again. The donated items are then sold for only £20.

Opening the new store was an all-hands-on-deck situation. Millfields Trust and their tenants assisted with different aspects of the project wherever possible. Turner & Townsend spent a day helping to paint the shop before stock was moved in, and Millfields tenants shared the message and helped find people to donate their old prom outfits. It was great to see everyone come together for such a worthy cause.

BBC Spotlight Feature

On a busy opening day, BBC came down to the new store to do a small feature for BBC Spotlight. In case you didn’t get a chance to watch our feature when it aired, you can see it below.

How to Donate & Opening Times

Although The Prom Cellar is currently closed due to low stock, there are still ways to support their mission. Posts about upcoming opening dates will be shared on Millfields’ social media, so be sure to keep an eye out. Additionally, donations of prom suits and dresses are always welcomed and can be made directly to the Millfields Trust. For details on how to donate, please email info@millfieldstrust.com. By contributing in any way possible, you will help The Prom Cellar continue to provide an affordable and unforgettable prom experience for students in the local area.
