Meet the Tenant: Turner and Townsend

Meet the Tenant is our way of introducing businesses to the wider Millfields Trust community and today we’d like you to meet Turner and Townsend. What type of business are they? Could they be of service to you or your own business in some way? Keep reading and find out more!

What is the main purpose of your business?

Turner & Townsend is an independent professional services company. We specialise in program management, project management, cost, and commercial management. Plus advisory services across the real estate, infrastructure, and natural resources sectors.

With 112 offices in 46 countries, we draw on our extensive global and industry experience to manage risk. But also maximising value and performance during the construction and operation of our client’s assets.

Which building are you based and what do you use the space for?

As a business that is green, inclusive, and productive at its core, the Genesis Building is a natural fit for us. We are pleased to be investing in the local community through the Millfields Trust Social Enterprise.

With more than 460 people employed already in the southwest of England, including 40 in the Plymouth area, we have been working with clients in the region for over 30 years. This new permanent base will enhance our service provision to current clients. And it is a strong statement of our strategic commitment to attracting new clients across Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall.

How has being a Millfield Trust tenant benefited you?

We place our responsibility for our people, communities and environment at the heart of every decision we make. This is so important to us. We strive to create a great place to work because we recognise that our people are at the heart of our success. We are stronger together. It’s important for us to promote integrity in everything that we do and apply our expertise to shape a better-built environment for future generations. And generate value for our communities.

By working in partnership with Millfields Trust’s charity, Millfields Inspired, we have a unique opportunity. Through our Coordinated Corporate Responsibility Programme, our people can enhance their skills as well as contribute to the local community. Particularly in the Stonehouse and Devonport areas of Plymouth.

What do you hope to achieve in 2022 and 2023?

We are targeting new recruits in the region as we expand our service offerings in project and program management, project controls, procurement, cost, and commercial management, to support clients across real estate, infrastructure, and defense. Details below for Plymouth Jobs:

If you could have one thing for your business today, what would it be?

We want our people to succeed both in work and life. To support this we promote a healthy, productive and flexible working environment that respects work-life balance. We believe that everyone should pursue their passions and provide a real opportunity for this. Whether you join one of our sports teams, social networks, or bring a new interest to your colleagues. Post pandemic I think it is important that we prioritise getting people to engage, collaborate and develop work practices that complement their lifestyle and career goals holistically.

What’s the best, or worst business advice you’ve ever received?

My best advice is to always remember people are what make a business successful. How you treat your people, clients, suppliers and the community around you truly matters. Everyone has a unique insight into the business, and you never know who will come up with the next innovation. Whilst working on an innovation initiative, one of the junior administration clerks came up with an idea to make double-sided black and white printing the default setting on all the office printers. This simple idea, taken seriously, reduced the overhead cost and carbon footprint of the office. Create an environment where people are heard, valued, and empowered to innovate and excel.
