Meet the Trustee: Laura Horton

Hello and welcome to this month’s Millfields Inspired feature, Meet the Trustee: Laura Horton. What an amazing summer that was! But all good things must come to an end and for the Millfields Inspired team, you won’t hear any complaints because it means it’s time to start working with schools in Stonehouse and Devonport again.

This is something Laura Horton knows all about. Earlier this year Laura contacted Millfields Inspired and suggested delivering playwriting workshops with children at St. Goerges C of E Primary Academy and St. Peter’s C and E Primary school. Students produced a short monologue that actors from Plymouth Conservatoire would later perform in two videos posted online.

(See links to both videos at the bottom of the page.)

Laura says, “Writing for other people’s voices is really powerful, there’s something about hearing your words interpreted by someone else that inspires confidence and new ways of thinking. I wanted to give the children the opportunity to create something in the hope it might galvanise them in their creativity.”

Breathless by Laura Horton

This is Breathless by Laura which is returning to Theatre Royal Plymouth on the 31st of October 2022.

Breathless is a funny, honest and stylish exploration of the knife-edge of hoarding, from the joy to the addiction and suffocating shame.

What do you enjoy most about your role as a Trustee?

It’s my first time as a Trustee so it’s new to me, but what I’ve loved so far is meeting the amazing members of the team; everyone is from such different disciplines and backgrounds. I’m also relishing the opportunity to use my PR skills to support and help development where I can.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

My interests are quite tied up in my career – writing and theatre. I do love reading, hiking and sea swimming too.

What should we all be doing in 2022?

Campaigning, rioting and where possible, resting.

Work-life balance is essential, is it achievable?

Not when you work as a freelance in the arts sector, the lines are too blurred…

Can you share the worst or best advice you have ever received?

It’s simple, but listening to it has transformed my career – trust your instincts.
