Each month, or whenever required, we’ll share local events organised by businesses in Stonehouse and Plymouth that we hope will interest you. It’ll also be an opportunity for our tenants across all our sites, Genesis, HQ, Mary Seacole Buildings and Creykes Court, to let us know what deals, events or news the people of Stonehouse should know about.

Plymouth Social Enterprise Festival 2022

Plymouth Social Enterprise Festival 2022. There will be some exciting Plymouth Social Enterprise Network-led happenings, including the return of the social enterprise quiz night! If you’d like to be involved they are looking for groups and organisations who are inspiring change who could offer to run a workshop, event, talk or participatory session at this year’s festival. The festival will run from the 16th – the 23rd of November, with International Social Enterprise Day falling on Thursday the 17th of November. British Art Show 9 is heading to Plymouth

The British Art Show 9 is heading to Plymouth from 8/10/22 until 08/02/23.

British Art Show 9 explores three overarching themes – healing, care and reparative history; tactics for togetherness; and imagining new futures. Each of the four exhibitions will also adapt to local contexts. In Plymouth the exhibition is centred on the migration of bodies, peoples, plants, objects, ideas and forms.

What’s On Stonehouse: PL Kicks

Check out today’s What’s On Stonehouse: PL Kicks. Free football sessions for children in Stonehouse are provided by Plymouth Argyle with the help of Trevor Higgins. It’s free for all children aged between 8 -16. All you need to do is turn up and play!

Plymouth Fundraisers Networking Event

It’s been two years since Plymouth Fundraisers Network held an in-person event. And now they are back and ready to introduce participants to all things fundraising! There will be opportunities to discuss future plans, ideas and what challenges might lie ahead. 

The event will be held at Plymouth University’s Sustainability Hub on 20th September.

Union Street Party: Stonehouse

Now isn’t the time to start thinking about the end of summer. No. Keep the sunshine coming for as long as possible but when the time is right to say goodbye to the longer days and flip-flops, what better way to do it than at this year’s Union Street Party on Sunday 11th September between 12-4pm.

This is the 13th Street Party along Union Street which celebrates Stonehouse’s local people, musicians, performers and all things creative. 

What to expect: Local bands, dance demos, aerial dancers, family activities, face painting, local sellers, and world foods from We are Jabulani and Plymouth Jollof Kitchen. 

But that’s not all, Wonderzoo founders Chi and Slain will be getting married on the day!

This is a free event and a great opportunity to have fun with the family and make new friends with people from the community. So remember to put Sunday the 11th of September in your diary!

Diversity Business Incubator: Networking Event

Diversity Business Incubator is hosting a networking event at their offices, HQ Building, Union Street, Office 37, on Friday 23rd September – 08:30 am – 10:00 am. 

It’s an opportunity for business owners, organisations, and entrepreneurs from in and around Plymouth to come together and connect; share resources and knowledge. It’s a relaxed atmosphere for like-minded individuals who are looking to generate and increase business opportunities for the people of Plymouth.

WonderZoo: Celebrate Respect History Project

Since February 2022, WonderZoo has been developing a National Lottery-funded history project called “Celebrate Respect History Project.” The purpose is to collect 100 oral history interviews, as well as digital and physical artefacts from the Plymouth Respect Festival.

As part of this project, Wonderzoo is running a monthly history group called ‘Memory Exchange’, where history enthusiasts from Plymouth and Stonehouse can come together and share information on historical interests. Sessions are free to attend and held on the last Saturday of each month at the Oasis Project, Stonehouse. The first one is on Saturday 30th July, 10am-12pm.

WonderZoo and Shekinah: Safer Streets Workshops

WonderZoo are super busy at the moment and we are trying to share as much information as possible because they are doing fantastic work here in our Plymouth communities. They are teaming up with Shekinah Restore Mutley to host four ‘Safer Streets’ workshops in their charity shop, which will bring people together to learn about Consent, Sexual Communication and Self- Defence, all with the aim of informing and empowering participants to feel safer in their daily lives.

Each 2-hour workshop (6-8pm) will offer an opportunity to develop some creative ideas surrounding the topics discussed on the night. On December 15th there will be a Shekinah Christmas Show where participants can have the chance to perform their creative pieces in front of an audience. The dates for the four workshops are: 11thAugust, 15thSeptember, 13th October, and 10th November, funded by Plymouth Octopus Project. (POP)

Union Corner: Vinyl Lounge Social Evening

Who likes listening to cool vinyl records? Who loves playing board games and drinking vegan soup? If this sounds like a great evening to you then why not head over to Union Corner, on Union Street, Stonehouse, for their Vinyl Lounge Social Evening? It’s held twice a month – 7:30pm to 10pm. You’ll get to have some fun with fellow vinyl enthusiasts while listening to some classic albums. 

This social evening is hosted by WonderZoo, is an opportunity to make friends in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a cup of tea, a selection of board games and a chat with like-minded folk. These events are funded by Nudge Community Builders and are free to attend, but of course, donations are welcome. Upcoming dates are: Thursday 4th August, Thursday 18th August, Thursday 8th September, Thursday 22nd September.

Diversity Business Incubator: Business Networking Event

The Diversity Business Incubator is holding a Business Networking Event on Friday 29th July, starting at 8:30 am and ending at 10:00 at their Office in HQ Building, PL1 3HQ.

What to expect from the event?

The DBI team said, “Through this event you will be able to exchange information and develop professional contacts, creating new connections and opportunities in a business environment. We hope this will be a great way for business referral exchange and a mutual ground to network and get to know your fellow entrepreneurs in and around Plymouth.”

Nudge Community Builders: Free Workshops!

Who likes free workshops? There’s usually something interesting happening over at Union Corner with the Nudge Community Builders and their creative partners. And with the summer holidays arriving soon they’ll be super busy organising lots of events and activities for families here in Stonehouse.

Creative Curiosities SW Performers: Theatre, Music and Dance

The team from Creative Curiosities SW Performers have received funding from BBC Children in Need to run free weekly theatre sessions for neurodivergent children and young people here in Stonehouse.

What can you expect during the session?

Participants will experience a mixture of stage combat, acting, dance and music performance. Sessions are Makaton and sensory supported – aimed towards 11 to 14 year olds and held at Oxford House Creative Hub every Thursday during term time 5 – 7 pm.

The Lord High Admiral – Storyteller Pilot Festival

Exim Dance: Family Movement Sessions

Are you looking for something fun to do with your little ones around Stonehouse? Once a month Exim Dance Company deliver free Family Movement Sessions for children aged 

3 – 5 years. This is a fun theme-based movement activity for families and guardians and don’t worry, you won’t be forced into learning the Tango! 

It’s about movement and fun!

Flavour Fest Plymouth: Jeremiah’s Journey

At this years Flavour Fest 2022, Plymouth, which runs from Friday 27th – 29th May, Jeremiah’s Journey is the chosen charity. Make sure you pop in and say hello! The team will have lots of fun activities available inside their large marquee. This includes face painting, magic shows, arts & crafts, and charity raffles.

Young Artist Exhibition: The Talk Shop

This is a great opportunity for young creatives here in Stonehouse. The Talk Shop would love children from the local area to be a part of their Young Artist Exhibition. Work in the exhibition will feature budding young artists from North Stonehouse and the theme will be North Stonehouse itself. Key things to consider – what is important to you about your local community? Family/friends? A favourite park or building? Your house or a local landmark? It is up to you!

It’s really easy to take part – no application required just bring your completed work into The Talk Shop by Saturday 4th June with your name and title of the work attached.

Union Corner: Stonehouse Action

Stonehouse Action are a group of local residents and organisations based at Union Corner. They have lots of activities and meetings running through each week. Check out their timetable here. Stonehouse residents are invited to come along to events and workshops to share ideas. But also chat about how to improve the local area.

Oxford House Creative Hub: Social Hour

Originally established as an online resourse during the pandemic, the Social Hour is now a free, face-to-face, weekly session. It takes place at Oxford House Creative Hub, Thursdays 4:30pm – 5:30pm for those aged 13 – 16. (Up to 25 for those who identify as disabled).

The group has been created for young Plymouth and Stonehouse residents. They can socialise, de-stress and basically chat freely about their day amongst peers in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Exim Dance Company continues to provide a safe place for young people’s voices to be heard. They encourage those to speak openly and honestly about their suggestions and discussions.

What’s On Stonehouse: Rendle Street Community Festival

Get down to Rendle Street on Sunday 5th June for this amazing street festival organised by Leadworks & Flameworks. There will be a range of stalls, kids activities and FREE workshops available to try. Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Pewter badges, Signwriting, Ceramics, Jewellery & Tile making.

Bellies will be taken care of with a BBQ, including Vegan options, and a fully licensed Bar!

And don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes. There’s Live music on the main stage during the day for families to enjoy. Then it’s all back to Leadworks for the adults where the music will continue until much later!

Jeremiah’s Journey: Plymouth Running Festival

Jeremiah’s Journey is seeking running enthusiasts who are interested in this year’s Plymouth Running Festival. There are three races to choose from. A half marathon, 10k or 5k that all start from the Hoe Promenade on Sunday 19th June 2022. 

There are three routes available which is a perfect way to include mixed ability levels. So if you’re a beginner, maybe this could be the great motivator you’ve been looking for?

If you sign up to run on #TeamJeremiah for a very reasonable price of £10, you’ll receive your very own running vest. This will look amazing as you complete one of the races and fundraise for Jeremiah’s Journey. They are a fantastic local children’s charity based in our HQ Building, Stonehouse.

If running is not your thing, there are many other ways to get involved with other fundraising activities.

Plymouth Octopus Project (POP): Oxford House Creative Hub

Plymouth Octopus Project (POP) supports grassroots organisations, charities and social enterprises here in Plymouth. POP are bringing their next Outreach and Drop-in Day to Oxford House Creative Hub. Tuesday 26 April between 12:30 pm – 16:00 pm.

There will be free support and advice, plus an opportunity to discuss any of your business plans or concerns. Members of the POP team will also be there to chat about their ongoing projects for the year. Register your place at the event today.

Reach Wrestling: Tavistock Town Hall

After their amazing sold-out show, Brawl in the Hall, at the Plymouth Guildhall in February, the Reach Wrestling Team have their next show at the Tavistock Town Hall. It’s on the 1st of May. Doors open at 18:30 pm and the show starts at 19:00 pm. There will be three championship matches on the night and an electrifying atmosphere for all wrestling fans. 

The Reach Wrestling Team also share their expertise through the Reach Academy. All ability levels are welcome. Students, between the ages 8- 14, should expect to be put through their paces during conditioning and bodyweight drills. Plus some ring work and basic, but fundamental wrestling moves!  

Classes are taught between 10 – 1 pm at Unit 10, Stonley Court, Mary Seacole Road, The Millfields, Plymouth, PL1 3JY, on a Saturday morning. Contact the team for further details reachwrestling@gmail.com
